SIGHT WORD Games
Using the Dolch sight word list, the following website: http://www.theschoolbell.com/Links/Dolch/Contents.html
Provides great printables. You can play the memory game with words, bingo with words, battleship with words and so on.
TIC TAC TOE
Make a tic tac toe board, but instead of using X’s and O’s, child must give a word that starts with the selected sound. If your child is not yet writing, parents write the word. The goal is for the child to recognize sounds and produce words that begin with those sounds. Correct spelling is NOT the goal.
Decide on a single letter sound and child must give a word that starts with the sound to mark a box. Use different colors to show different players.
Tic tac toe board looks like this:
| slide | sleep | sad |
| soup | sap | sock |
| snake | slip | stinky |
A more advanced way to play is to have each row a different sound:
| shin | shoe | shine |
| stop | start | stone |
| sled | slide | sloppy |
Here are some sounds to start with:
Single letter sounds to start with - s, t, v, m, p, b, d
Blends - tr, cl, bl, dr
Diphthongs - sh, ch, the
Endings - ot, at, it, ing, ent, ant
WORD LADDER
Change one sound of word to make a new one.
Example:
RAT
CAT
CAB
COB
BOB

LISTEN FOR YOUR SOUND
Assign child a beginning consonant or consonant blend. Read story and tell child to listen for the sound. When he hears it, he must stand up until he hears it again, at which point he may sit down. For example, your child has the "W" sound. Every time he hears a word that starts with "W" he has to stand up. He sits down when the hears another "W" word. You read "why", he stands. You read "with", he sits down. Pick a commonly used sound. This activity is great for wigglers and children who need to move around a lot.
SYLLABLE WAR
• Use a deck of simple picture cards representing words with one to five syllables.
• Deal the cards evenly and place them picture side down in a pile.
• Each player turns over top card and counts the syllables in the word.
• The player with the largest number of syllables takes the exposed cards.
• A syllable war occurs if both players have words containing the same number of syllables. At that point, players put three cards face down and then turn over the next card. The player with the largest number of syllables in the turned over card wins all the cards.
FREEZE TAG
Same rules as regular freeze tag, but to become unfrozen, someone must say a word that begins with whatever sound you decide on. Use single sounds to begin with, such as "t" and "p". As children get more familiar with sounds, use blends and diphthongs such as "sh", "th", "pl" ,"br". The “unfreezer” word is determined at the start of the game.
