Video games, computer games, handheld devices and the like have replaced good old fashioned rhythm fun. It’s time to dust off the hands, pull the plug on the DS, and return to hand clapping games.
This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. There’s always been a lot of buzz around music and brain development. Think Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart.
Music can enhance academic achievement. This doesn’t mean you must run out and buy a Steinway piano. Begin with hand clapping games. Brain research is just beginning to understand the effects of rhythm and movement on the brain.
So go on and clap and sing...

My kids used to do Music Together when they were little and we did a lot of hand clapping, singing and playing with rhythm instruments. It was fun for them and I know it helped them develop an early understanding of music. If it helped make them smarter too, then what a cool bonus :)
